Embracing and Coping with Change

How much change have you experienced in the last year?

changeChange is routine in today’s workplace. And, no matter what you do, there is really no way to escape change.

However, you can choose how you react to it.

If you can embrace and cope with change, you’ll be in a much better position to incorporate the new elements into your existing life in a meaningful and non-aggravating manner. You’ll be seen as a flexible and adaptable team player, and this reputation can open up many opportunities.  If, however, you consistently resist change, you can come to be seen as “part of the problem,” and an example of why the change is needed.

Coping is simply the way that we think about and deal with stressful events.  

It’s often your attitude towards change that determines your emotions and your experience of it. Some people view change positively, and see it as an exciting opportunity to learn and grow. Others see change negatively, as something to fear and to avoid.

People who resist change will likely find themselves passed over for promotions, or left behind entirely as their workplace moves in the new direction. The inability to cope with change in one’s personal life can lead to great stress, and other negative physical and psychological effects as well.

Maybe you can buy Unhappiness

Life is about experiences, however so many people get so caught up in churn of acquiring material items that they forget what truly makes them happy.  Newer cars, bigger houses, the latest cool piece of electronics to hit the market are great but is it what you really need?


Sure, the latest gadget may make you feel good for the evening, but that high is temporary, and you will be back chasing that retail high shortly after.  Toys are fun but they are not who you are.

Get out and experience the world.  Even if you can’t afford to get away, become tourist in and around your own city.  Skydive, bungee jump, go to the beach alone, take a hike on an unknown trail, go up to a complete stranger and invite them for coffee, read a book outside; there are so many things you could be doing that will enrich your life that doesn’t involve buying things.

Making your life richer is not always about getting richer in the monetary sense.  Learning a new language or skill, developing a hobby or just taking a bit more time meditate and relax can help to move you in the right direction.

Be happier. It’s your choice

That may be a surprise, a new thought, or the something you most need to be reminded of.   Namely, that how you feel is  a choice. How you feel in any given moment, on a daily basis, is what makes up how happy your life is, and it is your choice.

Too many people think that feelings are something that just happen to them, like the weather just happens; outside their control.

Some people will argue that being happy in the face of unpleasant situations is fooling oneself. True, and that’s not what’s being suggested here at all.

It would truly be a shame to wait until your deathbed to realize that the amount of happiness you allowed yourself to have through the course of your life was mostly a matter of choice.

Sure, exceptions abound. We’re not talking about experiencing the death of a loved one or any other of life’s real tragedies. They happen, but they are incidents, not the whole of life. We’re talking about choosing to live with an attitude of appreciation for what one has, and choosing to have the feelings you want, instead of the ones you’ve been programmed to have by society, family, media, politicians and the like.
